The 21st century has seen an unprecedented rise in the importance of sustainable business practices. As the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) aspects take center stage, we can expect businesses to tread the path of sustainability. Before we delve into the specific roles IT plays in sustainable business practices, it’s essential to understand their nexus. IT forms the backbone of modern organizations, making business operations more efficient and effective. A circular economy aims to eliminate waste by continually using resources. Here, IT provides the tools to shift from a linear “take-make-dispose” model to a circular one. IoT and blockchain can help track and trace products throughout their lifecycle, facilitating reuse, recycling, and resource recovery. Similarly, advanced analytics and AI can identify waste patterns and suggest ways to reduce or eliminate them.

Last but not least, IT fosters sustainable innovation. Businesses can leverage technologies like AI, IoT, and Big Data to develop new sustainable products, services, or processes. For instance, using AI for energy management systems can optimize energy use, reducing emissions and costs.
